3 Questions You Should Ask Yourself if Youre in a Career Rut - The Muse

3 Questions You Should Ask Yourself if Youre in a Career Rut - The Muse3 Questions You Should Ask Yourself if Youre in a Career RutFrom the outside, it looks like everythings going great. Youre getting your work done, youre reaching your goals, and youre staying on your managers good side. But underneath that neatly checked off to-do list, you might be feeling entirely differently. In fact, what looks like hard work to your co-workers may in fact be you on autopilot, just going through the motions of your job. And sometimes, thats just fine. But if you have big career goals youd like to reach, its important to check in with yourself periodically and make sure that your current job is helping you reach them, and that youre bedrngnis getting stuckverzierung in a career rut. How do you know the difference? Start by asking yourself these three questions- you might surprise yourself with the answers. 1. Is There Room for Advancement?Advancement can mean a lot of things, from salary increa ses and title promotions to increased responsibility and exciting new projects or clients. And when you work for a company that gives you the ability to showcase your talents and abilities and reap some of those benefits, you dont just get a few more shiny bullets for your resume, you also feel much more fulfilled and energized. Likewise, when those opportunities arent there, you eventually stop caring- no matter how much you might like your current position. The less you care, the less you work to improve yourself. The less you work to improve yourself, the faster your skills will atrophy. Maybe youre at a company where promotions are hard to come by, or maybe you just have a boss whos playing favorites and giving other people the opportunity. Regardless of your situation, a lack of opportunity can lead to a big time rut. 2. Do You Seek Out New Challenges? So, there are opportunities for growth at your company. But do you ever find yourself saying, Nah, not feeling it when they come up? The follow-up question to this one is Why dont you feel like challenging yourself? Do you have a lot going on in your personal life and need to coast for a little bit? Are you uninspired by the company mission and no longer motivated to do more to support it? Do you even want to be doing the job youre doing anymore? Only you know the answers to these questions. But if the thought of taking on additional responsibilities, or even adjusting your current ones so that you feel challenged, makes you grimace, then youre probably not feeling the job as much as you once did.3. Does Time Fly By?While Im certainly not recommending you should be working round the clock, we all know how great it is when were excited about what were doing You come into the office, lose track of time, and feel immersed in your work. Sure, there are times when you have to do tasks you dont love, but getting to the end of the workday doesnt feel like an eternity when you love your job and the company youre wor king for. On the other hand, regularly planning out your day so that you can leave at 5 PM on the dot is a red flag that youre not as engaged in your work as you once were. If you answered all these questions with a Yes- thats awesome Youre working hard in a role and company thats well-suited to your passions and goals. However, if you found yourself saying, no, no, and no, then its probably time to start thinking about your next step. Its OK to be in a rut, and its OK to no longer like where you work (for various reasons). As long as you recognize it and work to fix it, youre on the right path. 6 Dumb Things Interviewers Do

6 Dumb Things Interviewers Do6 Dumb Things Interviewers DoMany interviewers, including hiring managers, recruiters, and HR generalists, seem to forget what it was like when they were job seekers and dealt with the bad behaviors some interviewers put them through. Good interviewers are prepared, on time, and treat every applicant with respect. Bad interviewers dont. So its important to pay attention to bad interviewer behaviors they can reveal a lot about the culture of the organization and its leadership.Heres a list of six really dumb things bad interviewers do, and how you can deal with them.1. Spending fruchtwein of the time talking. The least skilled interviewers talk the most, but never realize it. Theyre simply nervous and dont know what to ask or how to even conduct an interview, so they just talk, talk, talk about things they do know. What to do Interrupt the interviewer using a technique called clipping. Clipping allows you to interrupt the interview respectfully, and refocus the conversation on the talents you bring to the position. When it becomes clear that the interviewer is doing most of the talking, try one of these phrases to clip or interruptI appreciate I understand I agree with For example, your clipping technique might sound like thisI appreciate all the details youve just given me. Ive had experiences accomplishing similar things for my current company, like when I had to deliver a project under a very tight deadline while juggling several other initiatives. Would you like to know more about that?2. Being silent. Some interviewers use silence as a technique. After you respond to a question, they just sit there looking at you in silence, trying to pressure you into saying more perhaps something you might not otherwise disclose. What to do If the interviewer is staring at you in silence, return their gaze and ask a simple question such asDid I give you enough details? orDoes that answer your question?By turning it around and respectfully question ing the interviewer, you facilitate a conversation and use the power you have to influence the interview.3. Saying Tell me about yourself. When interviewers use this ancient line, its a clear sign theyre unskilled at conducting an effective interview. Skilled interviewers open the interview by introducing themselves and their roles. Then they pause so that you can respond to the greeting. Then, they ask you specific questions about different areas of your experience that relate to the requirements of the positions they want to fill. What to do Be prepared to answer, because its an all-too-common tactic. Actually, this is your perfect cue to provide a 30-second overview of your experience that relates to the position, followed by one of the following two questionsWhat part of my background would you like to discuss first? orWhat do you feel are the most important skills someone must bring to this position?Again, youre using your power to direct the interview in a way that benefits your candidacy. 4. Being late and making you wait.I really hate it when interviewers are late. Its just disrespectful. As a job candidate, you have spent hours researching and preparing for the interview. You also commuted to the interviewers office and got there on time. The least they can do is be on time for the meeting that they requested. What to do Suck it up. Simply be gracious and respectful. Treat interviewers the way youd like to be treated and maybe theyll get the message. While youre waiting, use the extra time to your advantage. Review your questions, silence your cell phone, and maybe go to the restroom to check your appearance.5. Allowing interruptions.Interviewers can be pretty rude at times. Taking phone calls, texting, or allowing other types of interruptions is a sure sign that youre not their top priority. What to do An interview gives you an opportunity to evaluate whether or not this is the right environment or boss for you. How youre treated in an interview is a goo d indication of what you can expect if youre hired. If the interviewer is interrupted, use the time to assess how the interview is proceeding, and if its off track, how to direct the conversation to highlight your best qualifications for this position. Youre representing yourself and must stay focused and professional even when others are not.6. Engaging in off-topic questioning. Some interviewers try to impress and weaken the applicant by asking questions theyre sure the applicant cannot answer. (Ive seen this especially in interviews for technical occupations such as engineering, science, mathematics, and information technology. Maybe its a left-brain thing. What to do Ask the interviewer how the question relates to the position. For example, you might say the followingIm very interested in providing the information you need to assess my talents. Can you tell me how this question relates to assessing individuals for this position? In the end, dumb interviewer behavior is not about you. It simply makes the interviewer look like an idiot. Your job is to remain focused and professional in order to best represent yourself. And if you get a job offer after a bad interview, think about it carefully. Bad interviews can lead to bad jobs.

The best method to ask your boss for a promotion

The best method to ask your boss for a versetzungThe best method to ask your boss for a promotionFor many people, asking for a promotion is right behind public speaking on the list of things that cause their palms to sweat and their vision to go bleary.Yes, it can be intimidating, but knowinghowto ask for a promotioncan increase your chances of success.Focused preparation can help you feel ready to make the case about why you deserve a promotion. And thats the key - explaining why youve earned a promotion and why promoting you will be good for your organization. While a supervisor may occasionally promote someone without any nudging, youre largely responsible for building your own career ladder and climbing onto those rungs yourselves. So knowing how to ask for a promotion is a life skill fruchtwein of us will need more than once.Do you deserve a promotion? One of the hardest things about asking for a promotion is getting your own thoughts and emotions under control. Because underneath the hope that youll get the response you want is often the fear that perhaps you dont actually deserve it.Only you know whether youre ready for an increase in responsibility (and hopefully, pay), but if youre really struggling with this question, take a minute and ask yourself another are you suffering fromimpostor syndrome? Many of us - especially women - have a hard time acknowledging our skills and successes, and thats a problem. Understanding why you may deserve a promotion isnt just about catching up on your self-esteem game. Being able toexplainwhy you have what it takes to succeed is a critical part of asking for a promotion.Answering these questions honestly will help you recognize whether youre promotion material while also building a case for the big ask.1. Can you provide data that shows youve excelled in your current position and are ready for more responsibility or leadership?2. Have you already taken on additional responsibility and performed well?3. Have you receive d an offer of employment outside the company in a role higher than the one you currently hold?4. Are you highly regarded among your colleagues? You may not be able to answer yes to all these questions (especially an offer of employment), but seriously considering them will help you make an informed decision about whether youre ready to ask. When to ask for a promotionTheres no hard-and-fast rule about when to approach your boss about a promotion, so youll need to consider the context in which you work. Observe your organization - do people move into new positions frequently or are folks still carrying around the saatkorn business cards after 10 years? You dont necessarily have to follow in their footsteps, but its helpful to understand the culture around advancement.Even if you just recently started a position, it might not be too early to ask for a promotion. Sometimes businesses dont know exactly what they need when they place an ad.For instance, lets say you took a job as an admin istrative assistant, but once your employer realized you were good with numbers, they also handed you all the bookkeeping. Youve only been in the position for six months, but your job responsibilities have increased substantially from your original offer. It might be a good time to ask for a promotion that reflects your current role.On the other hand, certain industries or organizations might have more rigid standards around promotions - like an employee cant move into a senior position until they receive a particular certification or have worked in the role for a certain number of years. You could always ask even if you havent met the criteria, but youll be in a better position if you ask for a promotion when you know you can back it up.In any case, letting your boss know that youre interested in advancing - either now or in the future - can be a powerful way to demonstrate initiative. The best method to ask for a promotionSo youve decided that you deserve a promotion and now is the time to do it. But how? Should you ask for a meeting? Should you put it in writing? A lot will depend on the formality of your work environment and the relationship with your supervisor. The truth is, theres really no best way, but any of these options could be best for you.Do some researchIf the promotion youre looking for is into an existing role thats about to become available, you could benefit from talking with the person currently in the role. Get some intel about the responsibilities of the position as well as the things they liked and didnt like. Do some digging to make sure its a position you actually want. Then see if the current employee would be willing to recommend you for the role. Since outgoing employees know their position the best, supervisors often include them in the hiring process for their replacement. An informed recommendation could carry a lot of weight.Set up a meeting with your boss and ask directlyOf course, the most straightforward way to ask for a pro motion is simply to ask. If you work in a very formal, hierarchical organization, you may decide to put together a formal presentation highlighting your past successes and the reasons your promotion would benefit the company.A powerpoint pitch deck could be overkill in some organizations, but even if youre not putting together a formal presentation, youll want to be prepared with the same information - not just why you deserve a promotion but why your promotion is the best thing for the organization.Casually mention the promotionWere not talking about some awkward cough promotion cough moment here. That never works. But sometimes planting a small seed of an idea is a great way to warm up a supervisor before you actually make the ask. So instead of scheduling a meeting with your boss, mention that youd be interested in a position opening up when you see them in the conference room. Or tell them that youre excited about the new responsibilities youve been taking on and have been think ing about how to provide more value to the team. Then send a follow-up email a day or so later to remind them about the conversation and let them know that your interest is sincere.Take on new responsibilitiesA popular career mantra is Do the job before you get the job. While thats not always possible, asking for a promotion may be a good time to try it.Theres no better way to demonstrate that you deserve a promotion than to show your boss that youve already accepted significant responsibility and are performing well. Of course, the potential downside is that you just have more responsibility with the same title, but hard work will eventually pay off.Ask a trusted advisorSometimes the best advocate is someone else.In fact, research shows that many people (women especially) are much better advocates for others than they are for themselves. So if youre not sure that you can tout your own gifts (though this is a lifelong skill that should be learned), reach out to someone else in your o rganization that might be able to put in a good word for you.If the answer is noTheres no way around it. Asking for a promotion and getting shot down is a huge disappointment. But its not necessarily the end of the conversation. If your supervisor is willing to provide feedback on why you didnt receive the promotion, listen to them. Take the steps you need to build a stronger case and ask again in six months. If you left the conversation with your boss believing that a promotion at this organization will never be in your future, lick your wounds and use the loss as motivation to seek out a higher role at a new company. No matter what happens, remember that no one is going to build that career ladder for you - and its a good thing, because that means you have the power to ask for the positions you want. This article first appeared on Comet Financial.

The art of networking

The art of networking The art of networkingPosted October 13, 2011, by Helen Isbister Australians are good at lots of things. We are world class when it comes to relaxed attitudes, VB drinking and swanning around the beach at Christmas time. But networking is a lost art on Aussie shores. The problem is that lots of Australians associate networking with selling. And down under, selling is a dirty word. Think of it like this networking is about building business relationships that are beneficial for both parties. It may sound like a PR spiel, but being able to make the most of your contacts will save you time, money and energy. And youll be helping others too so learn to love it. But while we are told to network, network and network, how is it actually done? Read on so you can perfect the art of making contacts, cultivating networks and making the most of them. Ready-made network The good news is that finding the majority of your contacts is easy they are right under your nose Friend s and family, current work colleagues, former colleagues, former classmates and teachers are all part of a ready-made network. Give them a call to find out what they are doing and make the time to catch up. Spreading your wings While your ready-made network is a very good foundation, you will need to think outside the square and network outside your comfort zone if you want to kick your career into a higher gear. Valuable contacts can potentially be found anywhere cocktail parties, weddings, airplane trips, supermarket lines, pub toilets, sporting events and the theatre. Pursue activities which you will not only enjoy but will be likely to meet people at, and most importantly make sure you are a signed-up member of any industry groups. Making contact If you are attending a work function, split up from your work colleagues so you can meet new people, but choose your targets wisely and use some common sense. Dont break up the party when two people are in a deep, and obviously private , conversation. Always have business cards handy so the meet and greets can be followed up on. Always make contacts with the best intentions without only thinking about what they will be able to do for you. Dont pressure people into relationships, ask personal questions, stand too close, take without giving something in return or tell lies. Online networking It hasnt taken long for the Internet to revolutionise the way we do business, so dont discount it as a valuable networking tool. MySpace, Facebook and LinkedIn are all good for maintaining both social and professional networks. They have functions for job hunting, uploading applications and getting in touch with people who can help get you on the track to a brilliant career. Maintain your network Once you have grown your list of contacts, you will have to cultivate them. Dont store piles of business cards only to have on standby in case you need to call around for a new job. It will reek of desperation and ulterior motives. Stay in touch with people you like and respect even if they cant help you immediately. Keep the members of your network up to date with available positions within your company. It will be your chance to both maintain contact and show you are looking out for them. But dont just keep it strictly to business going out for lunch, coffee or drinks is a good way to catch up socially and keep the flame alive. So you have a phobia of small talk? Mindless chitchat not your thing? Dont like sticking around long enough for the ice to be broken? Shy people naturally find it harder to schmooze but that doesnt mean they cant build a solid network. The number one rule in networking is to be yourself. It will be apparent a mile off if someone is artificial. So if youre introverted, dont try transform into an extrovert for the purposes of building a network. Smile and be genuine and you will attract a solid group of contacts regardless. Utilising your network After putting a significant amount of time and energy into building a network, make sure you leverage it when you need to. If you need some help in a job hunt then scout around and see if anything is going in the companies of your contacts. Dont apologise for asking for help it will make you seem unprofessional but make sure its a two-way street. Start returning favours, lunch, tickets, advice, or assistance, and referrals for those who already did something for you. Networking is essentially about sharing and returning favours. Random Acts of Kindness - Nice Things to Do at Work

Random Acts of Kindness - Nice Things to Do at WorkRandom Acts of Kindness - Nice Things to Do at WorkRandom acts of kindness are unexpected things we can do to brighten up other peoples days. Examples would be paying for someones order at a coffee shop or giving a neighbor a ride home from the train station on a rainy day. They arent activities that typically take a lot of time, but they can be very meaningful to the recipient. Performing random acts of kindness can help improve the atmosphere at your workplace. When you do something nice for a coworker, he or she will truly appreciate it and may pay it forward by performing an act of kindness for someone else. Here are 24 ways to make a coworkers day. Bring your coworker a cup of coffee when he or she seems in need of a late daypick-me-up.Share your mid-afternoon snack with your coworker or, if you dont want to share, bring an extra one (everyone gets hungry a couple of hours after lunch).Buy your coworker her favorite iced cold be verage on the first warm day of the year. Theres nothing like an iced coffee or tea to welcome spring.Celebrate Friday- or make Monday more bearable- by bringing in a treat for the entire department. Alternatively, you can do this on a rainy day to cheer everyone up. Offer to stay at work late or come in early to help a coworker with a difficult project. Dont wait to be asked because some people are reluctant to say they need assistance. However, make koranvers your coworker wants your help.Praise your associate for a job well done. People rarely complain about getting too many compliments.Clean out the break room fridge before everyone else arrives for the day or after they have left. Youll have the gratitude of the entire staff.Take a difficult customer off your coworkers hands by interrupting their conversation and saying youre there to relieve him for lunch or a break (it doesnt have to be true). If you see your colleague is about to make a mistake, try to intervene to prevent i t. Most people- unfortunately not all- will appreciate the interference.Offer unsolicited advice, especially to a new colleague who seems to be floundering. Again, not everyone will be grateful for your intervention, but most people will.Stop others from spreading a rumor about someone. You may make some enemies, but the subject of the gossip will truly appreciate it.If you see something your colleague will absolutely love- for example, a book about a topic in which he or she is interested- give it as a gift. Avoid getting something that is too extravagant, however. Invite a less experienced colleague to a meeting or to work on a project that can help her grow. Before you do this, make sure his or her supervisor and yours are okay with it.Ask a new coworker to join your lunch group. Remember what it was like to have to eat alone?Stop by your coworkersdesk to say good morning or goodbye.Hold the (otherwise unoccupied) elevator while your colleague groe nachfrages back to his or her d esk to get a forgotten element even if youre in a hurry to leave the building.Praise your officemateto his or her boss who may not realize how hard he or she is working. Save your cubicle neighbor from having to make a trip to the office supply closet by offering to pick up extra supplies when you get yours.Volunteer tomentor an inexperienced coworker. Many people are too shy to ask or may not even think of it.Put your colleagues bully in his or her place or listen sympathetically to your coworkers complaints about it.Offer advice on how to deal with a workplace bully.Tell a coworker about an internal job opening for which you think he or she would be perfect. Pack an extra brown bag lunch for a coworker who cant ever seem to remember to bring his or her own.Have an errand to run in your coworkers neighborhood after work? Offer him or her a ride home.Offer to relieve your associate of his or her undesirable tasks for a day or more. Be sure to clear it with both your bosses.

Flexible Scheduling for Todays Seasonal WorkersFlexible Scheduling for Todays Seasonal WorkersFlexible Scheduling for Todays Seasonal Workers ConlanScheduling around the holidays can be a challenge as you try to balance business needs with employees desire for flexibility. People pick up part-time jobs seasonal work for a little more spending cash, but even seasonal workers still want the flexibility to finish their own holiday shopping and spend time with family. And you have to juggle all of this while ensuring you have enough people on kralle to deal with the holiday rush.Holidays put scheduling into focus, says Lisa Disselkamp, a workforce management expert at Deloitte, a professional services firm headquartered in New York City. They become erratic and problems are really exaggerated during that time. When it comes to a flexible work schedule, employees are looking for several things, says Disselkamp. They want a schedule that- Is predictable enough to plan around but flexible en ough to allow for time off- Stable enough to count on from week to week- Provides enough hours to make it worth it to take the jobHeres how to accommodate your holiday hires need for flexibility into your hectic holiday staffing plans.Act, Dont ReactEmployers tend to rely on customer demand when trying to put schedules together for seasonal workers, Disselkamp says. Theyre trying to minimize costs, which makes sense, but they put the burden of flexibility on the employee. They dont plan well enough in advance to consider the impact on employees.Running a just-in-time approach is painful for the worker, says Disselkamp, and its hard to attract employees when you have erratic schedules.Instead, take note of shopping patterns during the rest of the year and during other holiday seasons to figure out when your peaks and valleys are. Then, set up flexible work hours by using rotations and staggered shifts to meet demand. Not everybody rushes in the door when it opens, except maybe Black Friday, she says.Empower Workers to Self-Manage Their HoursGiving seasonal workersmore control over their own flexible work hours can help them make some of the decisions for you. Give associates more control over their own work lives and easier means to connect with the company, says Charlie DeWitt, vice president of business development at Kronos, a workforce management company based in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. Retailers can accomplish this with mobile solutions that allow associates to check schedules, adjust availability and preferences, swap shifts and communicate with peers and managers.Pool Talent Across LocationsIf you have more than one store, take a page from what hospitals, hospitality and logistic companies do Look at your holiday hires as one big pool, rather than small groups assigned to specific locations, Disselkamp says. With float jobs, employees can show up every day to a different location, she says. Its like working as a substitute teacher.Employees get the fl exible schedule they desire, while giving you the ability to ramp staffing up or down in certain locations.Make Tough Shifts More AppealingBoosting wages for certain shifts can help sweeten the deal during those times when circumstances force you to change planned schedules.Disselkamp recommends using incentives to boost retention and reward those employees who are there for the unexpected. Dont be afraid of overtime , she says. When you think about the price of hiring, a couple of bucks an hour goes a long way.Looking to learn more about holiday hiring?
